Take Payment With Tap to Pay

    2 min read#9

Once the phone is connected, Tap to Pay sits at the top of the payment methods in the register.

    Take payment:

    1. Ring up the bill as usual and tap Take payment.
    2. Choose Tap to Pay (on iPhone it reads Tap to Pay on iPhone).
    3. If the tip prompt is on, the guest picks a tip first.
    4. Hold the phone out to the guest and ask them to hold the card against the reader. On iPhone it's at the top, near the camera. On Android it's usually in the middle of the back, but the position varies between models – try it once so you know where it is on your particular phones.
    5. Wait for confirmation. The bill closes and the receipt is created automatically.

Guests can pay with a physical card, a phone or a watch – anything contactless works.

Tips: you set the tip options under Sales → Payment methods → Tip prompt. There you choose percentages, fixed amounts and whether the guest can enter their own amount. See the article on tips and costs.

If the payment doesn't go through:

    • Card declined – the bill is untouched. Ask for another card or pick another payment method.
    • The guest pulled the card away too early – start again from Take payment.
    • You cancelled – nothing is recorded.

A bill never closes unless the payment is approved. So if you're unsure whether a payment went through, you can always start over – there's no risk of charging the guest twice for the same bill.

Refunds: returns work just like any other card payment. You make the refund from the order in the register, and the money goes back to the same card. See the article on refunds and returns on card.

Good to know: the phone needs internet, and the screen must be on when the guest holds up their card. A phone case is usually fine, but very thick cases or magnetic mounts can interfere with the read.
