Express Kiosk – Setup and Configuration

    4 min read#18

Vendion's Express kiosk is a self-service device (like McDonald's kiosks) where guests can order themselves at the counter – perfect for lunch rushes, takeaway-focused restaurants, or as an overflow terminal during peak hours.

    What is Express kiosk?

Express is a self-service view at /staff/express that:

    • Shows the menu in large, click-friendly cards
    • Takes card payment directly at the kiosk
    • Sends the order to the kitchen automatically
    • Resets itself after each order (attract screen)
    • Has inactivity timer (default 120 sec)

Unlike Online Order (chat-based), Express is visually menu-oriented.

    Hardware needed

    Minimum

    • Tablet – iPad (9"+) or Android (10"+) in landscape
    • Stand/mount – attached to the counter or wall
    • Card reader – integrated or via Stripe Terminal
    • Wi-Fi/4G – stable internet connection
    • 15" screen for better readability
    • Back stand with 30° tilt toward the guest
    • Receipt printer nearby (for guest to get physical receipt)
    • Power supply – cable or magnetic dock

    Step 1: Register workstation

A kiosk must be registered as a workstation in Vendion's system. Vendion does this for you. Contact Vendion support with the following details:

    • Name – e.g., "Kiosk 1"
    • TypeExpress
    • Monthly price – per your agreement (e.g., SEK 490/month)

Within 1 business day the kiosk is set up and ready to configure.

    Step 2: Configure Express settings

    After workstation is created:

    1. Go to Admin → Settings → Express
    2. Select your kiosk from the list
    3. Configure:

    Theme

    • Light or Dark
    • Affects the entire kiosk surface

    Order type

    • Ask customer – kiosk asks "Dine-in or takeaway?"
    • Dine-in only – all orders marked as dine-in
    • Takeaway only – all orders marked as takeaway

    • Show allergen icons on/off – whether allergen icons are shown on the menu
    • Allergen filter on/off – whether the guest can filter the menu

    Images

    • Show product images on/off – whether images are shown on menu cards

    Upsell

    • Enable upsell step on/off – shows "Want to add anything else?" before payment

    Inactivity timer

    • Seconds before reset – default 120 sec
    • Recommended: 90-180 sec depending on customer pace

    Payment method

    • Card (default) – card payment only
    • Future: cash, Swish

    Step 3: Connect the kiosk

    1. On the tablet – open the browser
    2. Navigate to https://app.vendion.com/staff/express
    3. Log in with a staff account that has express.operate permission
    4. Select the right restaurant and workstation
    5. The kiosk loads the attract screen

Step 4: Set up kiosk mode (important!)

To prevent guests from leaving the app:

    On iPad

    • Activate Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility)
    • Triple-click the home button to start the mode
    • Select zones that can be interacted with
    • Set a PIN code so staff can exit

    On Android

    • Activate Screen Pinning (Settings → Security)
    • Or install a kiosk app like Scalefusion or Hexnode

    Step 5: Test the flow

    Before opening for guests:

    1. Tap "TAP TO START" on the attract screen
    2. Choose order type (if configured)
    3. Add some products
    4. Review the cart
    5. Test payment (simulated)
    6. Verify the receipt prints
    7. Verify the order lands in KDS

    Best practices

    Placement

    • Visible from entrance – guests should see it directly
    • Flat surface – no movement
    • Near card reader – card should reach the reader without stretching
    • Good lighting – screen shouldn't reflect

    UX tips

    • Large images – product images sell
    • Short menu – limit to 20-30 products for faster flow
    • Clear CTA – "ADD" should be large and colorful

    Security

    • Clear cache regularly – the tablet shouldn't accumulate junk
    • Restart daily – avoid memory leaks
    • Update OS – security fixes required for the card reader
