From summer guest to return visit: loyalty without an app

From summer guest to return visit: loyalty without an app

How can a loyalty programme encourage summer guests to return?

Make joining voluntary and straightforward, offer a clear reason to return and track actual repeat visits. An app-free programme lets guests view benefits in their phone’s browser. SMS and email marketing need a separate assessment of consent and applicable rules.

An enjoyable summer dinner can be the start of more visits. A holidaymaker who lives far away and a guest from the neighbourhood have different opportunities to return. Take that into account when planning your loyalty programme.

Give guests a reason to join

Explain what the programme provides. It could be a digital lunch stamp card, advance information about upcoming events or benefits for repeat visits. Start with something the restaurant can deliver consistently.

Staff should be able to describe it in one short sentence. Avoid inserting a lengthy registration process into payment. Give guests time to read the terms and make their choice.

In Vendion Marketing, guests can view points, tiers and stamp cards on a mobile-friendly guest page without downloading a dedicated app. This is a web page, not a promise of a membership card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

    Separate receipts from marketing

A phone number supplied for a receipt does not automatically mean permission for autumn campaigns. Explain the purpose and keep the advertising choice separate from receipt delivery.

In Sweden, prior consent is the general rule for SMS and email marketing to individuals. A limited existing-customer exception applies to a business’s own similar products under specific conditions. A GDPR legal basis is also needed. See sections 19–20 of the Marketing Act. Guests always have the right to object to direct marketing.

Plan autumn communication at the start

Choose a relevant reason to return: the autumn menu, a lunch routine or an upcoming event. Explain when information will arrive and avoid messages that simply repeat that the restaurant exists.

Let guests express their own interests where needed. A single purchase does not reliably identify a person or the preferences of their whole party. Only collect information for a clear purpose that you can manage properly.

AI can help draft a campaign or summarise information. The responsible person should review recipients, wording, benefits and timing before the communication is used.

    Measure visits, not just membership

Track how many guests join, use a benefit and actually visit again. Distinguish additional visits from those that would probably have happened anyway. Many registrations with few active guests suggest the programme needs work.

Include the cost of benefits, messages and staff time. Sales from a return visit are not the same as profit. Change one part at a time so you can see what makes a difference.

Vendion Marketing brings loyalty and campaigns into the same system as the restaurant’s other work. See pricing and module scope or see Vendion live.
