Digital punch cards for returning summer guests

Digital punch cards for returning summer guests

How do I design a digital punch card guests will use?

Choose a clear benefit, understandable rules and simple identification at purchase. Show guests their balance and track return visits and costs. A digital punch card can work in a browser without a separate app.

A digital punch card works best when guests have a reason to return. Someone working nearby or staying locally for several weeks may appreciate it. A tourist leaving tomorrow has different needs.

Start with the habit you want to support: a regular lunch, an after-work visit or the next dinner at your restaurant. The card should reinforce a good restaurant experience, rather than provide the entire reason to return.

Write the rules before setting up the card

Decide which purchases earn a stamp, whether several purchases on the same day count and how returns are handled. Explain the benefit and any expiry date. Staff and guests should be able to read the same straightforward terms.

Choose a benefit that fits the concept and can be delivered during a rush. Avoid promising an item that often sells out. If the restaurant closes after summer, explain where and when the card can be used.

    Make identification part of service

Vendion Marketing supports digital punch cards, points and tiers in the same system as the POS. Guests do not need a separate app to use the browser-based experience.

Train staff to identify the guest, register a stamp and redeem a benefit. Also test an incorrect phone number, a guest identified after purchase and a returned order. These situations determine how much daily administration the programme creates.

Membership is not blanket permission for advertising

Explain which personal data you collect, why and for how long. Only request information needed for the purpose.

In Sweden, promotional email and SMS to consumers normally require prior consent. A limited existing-customer exception has specific conditions. A phone number on a receipt or club membership is not blanket permission to send advertising. See sections 19–20 of the Marketing Act.

The legal basis for processing personal data is a separate GDPR question. Guests always have the right to object to direct marketing, as IMY explains. Make opting out easy and respect it in automated messages too.

    Track more than membership numbers

Review how many members return, how many redeem their benefit and what those benefits cost. Include software, staff handling and any SMS charges. A large member list says little if the programme is unused.

Compare similar periods and interpret the result carefully: a member who already visited weekly is not automatically an additional return visit caused by the card. AI can help with analysis and campaign drafts, but you need to assess the outcome.
