POS in the payment terminal: all-in-one restaurant workflows

A server takes an order on the terrace, sends it to the kitchen and moves to the next table. When the guests are ready to pay, the same device handles the bill, payment and receipt. This is the workflow behind a POS in a payment terminal.

More than retrieving a bill

Paying at the table can mean different things. A terminal may simply retrieve an amount from another POS. An all-in-one device can also run the ordering workflow: opening a table, recording items and modifiers, and sending orders onwards.

Follow the complete guest visit

For a table-service restaurant, four workflows are especially useful to try:

1. Open the correct table and enter drinks, food and modifiers.
2. Send the order to the appropriate kitchen or bar station.
3. Add another order to an existing tab.
4. Split the bill, take payment and provide a receipt.

Menus, prices and tables belong to the same system as the other registers. A small display nevertheless feels different from a large POS screen. Have staff try a detailed order and a split bill, rather than just a simple payment.

Measure movement in your own venue

The potential benefit comes from fewer trips to a fixed register and less repeated data entry. The time saved depends on distances, working habits and demand. A mobile device does not, for example, make cooking faster.

Observe one section during a shift. Count trips to the register and record why they were needed. Then compare those tasks using the handheld device. Include corrections and how easily staff find the right table. This provides a firmer basis for a decision than a universal promise of minutes saved per guest.

Connectivity, charging and backup procedures

Vendion requires internet access. Check coverage at the far end of the terrace and wherever else staff work. A terminal’s cellular connection does not itself guarantee that the entire installation keeps working during a network fault.

Plan charging points, paper supplies and responsibility for devices between shifts. Battery life depends on usage. Follow Adyen’s user manual and the configuration supplied for your equipment.

Compare the complete cost

Include the POS licence, device, acquiring and any additional services. Vendion software modules have no minimum contract term and run until the end of the paid month; hardware and acquiring can have separate terms.
