Tap to Pay for food trucks: accepting payments on a phone

Counter space is limited in a food truck. Using a phone to receive payments removes the need for a separate card reader at that payment point. Tap to Pay can therefore work at the serving hatch or as an additional payment point during an event.

It still requires planning for connectivity, power and capacity. Phones need charging and protection from heat, rain and spills, just like other equipment.

How the payment works

The guest holds a contactless card or mobile wallet near the phone’s reading area, following the instructions on screen. The payment app shows whether the purchase is approved. Staff check the result before handing over the food.

For iPhone, you need a compatible model and an app from a supported payment provider. See Apple’s information about Tap to Pay. Android requires NFC and a device meeting the provider’s current security and software requirements. Adyen’s device requirements cover more than an Android version number.

Check the phones you plan to use before the event. Tap to Pay accepts contactless payments; a phone does not have a slot for inserting a card as a physical terminal does. Available payment methods and features depend on the solution. Adyen documents its supported options here.

Prepare payment points before opening

Activate your payment agreement, configure user permissions and test a purchase and refund. Check how guests receive receipts and how interrupted or uncertain payments appear. Avoid adding untested personal phones during the rush.

Vendion requires internet access. Test coverage at the hatch and wherever staff will work. An event’s guest network may be congested once the audience arrives. Plan an alternative connection and check it works with your equipment.

Keep chargers and power banks available, assign responsibility for devices and test screen readability outdoors. Another payment point only helps if the kitchen and collection area can handle the extra orders.

Connect orders and payments

Vendion Tap to Pay connects payments to the POS workflow through Vendion’s acquiring service. Check payment status in the system; do not retry solely because a screen appears stuck. Follow the procedure for an uncertain result to avoid charging the guest twice.

After the shift, reconcile sales, refunds and payout records. Settlement timing, fees and deductions follow your payment agreement. Using one provider does not make transactions free of charge.

Choose for the way you work

A compatible phone can be useful as an additional payment point. For long shifts, a dedicated terminal or All-in-One device may suit better. Compare handling, battery life, receipts and the tasks staff perform.
