Tap to Pay or a card reader: choose equipment for the job

Fewer devices can be convenient on a small counter or at a temporary sales point. A dedicated payment terminal may suit a restaurant with long shifts and frequent payments. Start with how the equipment will be used.

Confirm the payments you need to accept

Tap to Pay accepts contactless payments. Adyen's iOS mobile solutions overview distinguishes this from a connected card reader, which can offer additional ways to read a card. Capabilities depend on the selected solution.

List the payment methods you need and have the supplier confirm support for Sweden, your app and the exact device model. Check PIN handling, refunds and any limitations for that combination. Consult the provider's current compatibility information, rather than judging by the phone's age alone.

Consider a complete shift

Who uses the phone? Could it be occupied with an order when a colleague needs to take payment? Where is it charged and how readable is it in bright sunlight? A payment app does not remove the need for power, connectivity or a workable routine.

If the device is also used privately, consider sign-in, updates, access to the work tool and what happens at the end of a shift. Shared equipment needs a clear handover between staff.

Rehearse the fallback procedure

Decide what staff do when a device fails or cannot complete a payment. Test finding open orders on another device and checking payment status before trying again. A spare helps only if it is ready to use.

Then compare equipment, subscription and payment costs. The appropriate setup may combine phone payments with fixed or handheld terminals.
